Continuous Tactile Feedback for Motor-Imagery Based Brain-Computer Interaction in a Multitasking Context

چکیده
Motor-Imagery based Brain Computer Interfaces (MI-BCIs) allow users to interact with computers by imagining limb movements. MI-BCIs are very promising for a wide range of applications as they offer a new and nontime locked modality of control. However, most MI-BCIs involve visual feedback to inform the user about the system’s decisions, which makes them difficult to use when integrated with visual interactive tasks. This paper presents our design and evaluation of a tactile feedback glove for MI-BCIs, which provides a continuously updated tactile feedback. We first determined the best parameters for this tactile feedback and then tested it in a multitasking environment: at the same time users were performing the MI tasks, they were asked to count distracters. Our results suggest that, as compared to an equivalent visual feedback, the use of tactile feedback leads to a higher recognition accuracy of the MI-BCI tasks and fewer errors in counting distracters.

متن کاملClassification of EEG-based motor imagery BCI by using ECOC
AbstractAccuracy in identifying the subjects’ intentions for moving their different limbs from EEG signals is regarded as an important factor in the studies related to BCI. In fact, the complexity of motor-imagination and low amount of signal-to-noise ratio for EEG signal makes this identification as a difficult task. In order to overcome these complexities, many techniques such as variou...
متن کاملPlatform for analyzing multi-tasking capabilities during BCI operation
Operating brain-actuated devices requires split attention between the interaction of the device with its environment and the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) feedback. In case of screen-based applications it is possible to merge BCI feedback and application, but not in case of controlling devices, like wheelchairs or exoskeletons. Recently we demonstrated that BCI feedback could be provided via t...

OBJECTIVE This study investigates the impact of a continuously presented visual feedback in the form of a grasping hand on the modulation of sensorimotor EEG rhythms during online control of a brain-computer interface (BCI). METHODS Two groups of participants were trained to use left or right hand motor imagery to control a specific output signal on a computer monitor: the experimental group ...
